QuestionHello I'm trying to find the right car to buy. I have two possibilities right now; a 2000 Corolla VE, with no options and 105000km (the previous owner was 82 years old) with a price of $7800 cnd. The second car is a 2001 Hyundai Accent GSi with 135000km with nice options and asking $5500. I am a university student and my parents live 800kms from school, so I do that trip often and I don't have the income for costly repairs. My question is: Is purchasing the Hyundai a gamble?
AnswerCompared to the Corolla, the Hyundai is a huge gamble. Those nice options won't mean anything sitting on the side of the road. The Hyundai is a better car than many years ago, but I wouldn't rely on it for very long, driving those kind of miles.
On the other hand, the Corolla seems overpriced for a stripped 2000 model. After my conversions, it appears to be about $1,000-$1500 too high and that would be in good to excellent condition from a private party. Unless a dealer is throwing in an extensive extended warranty, there would be justification for the price difference.
I'd keep looking for a Toyota or Honda product with a more realistic price.
Good luck!
