Tips on Buying Cars: Used vs. New, pair shoes, new car

Someone told me that as long as you take good care of your car, you can just buy a cheap used car instead of a new one. He has a very old toyota that he's driven for twenty years, and everything's still functioning normally except for the ac. What are the major differences between buying a used and new car?
