Tires: Studded tires on AWD, dry traction, studded tires

Is it recommended to use studded tires on AWD vehicles?  I have an 09 Audi Quattro and I am trying to decide on tires.

Studs are recommended when the roads are frequently icy.  I don't think AWD changes this recommendation.

But you should know that studs do decrease the dry traction, so this decision needs to hinge around what the conditions are where you live.
