QuestionHi, Barry! Well, my question is: My car is a Chevy cavalier base coupe 2002. Recently I've bought new 15" rims, and i wanna know the correct tire pressure for my tires (radial lte futura 2000 185/60 r15)... i'll wait for your answer. Thanks!
AnswerJuan,
On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size. The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.
I have been told that the tire placard is used pretty much everywhere, so even though you are not in the US, you ought to find it to compare with what I am about to post next. Please be aware that I am quoting from a book that summarizes the placards from US vehicles and there may be some variation in other countries.
So a US 2002 Chevy Cavalier came with P195/70R14 at 30 psi. To get the same load carrying capacity a P185/60R15 needs ...... well ..... This tire is too small. For reference, an LS model Cavalier came with P195/65R15. So your tire is 3 sizes too small.
You have 2 choices: Change to the proper tire size - or - live with it and hope nothing bad happens.
If you chose to live with it, then I would suggest you use 38 psi and monitor the tire closely for signs of a separation - a bulge in the tread area, or a vibration that gradually is getting worse. If you experience this, remove the tire immediately.
