Tires: break in period, mold release, color appearance
QuestionI just bought some 4 new tires, every year. I was once told that new tires are alittle bit slippery till about 150 miles. I asked many people and told me no. But I think the break-in period is true. I now have 60 miles and the tires seems to be improving. One site did talk about heat adjustment for the first few miles!
whats your take on this <<<<
thanks
AnswerNew tires do have a break in period.
First, tires are molded and they have mold release compounds on the surface that takes a bit of miles to wear away.
Second, tires have waxes and anitoxidants to protect the tires from oxygen degradation - both in storage and in service. During the first few months of use, these will come to the surface of the tire and sometimes cause an whitish / off-color appearance. This may take as long as 6 months to stabilize.
Heat adjustment is more for racing purposes, so I don't think it is applicable - but it is similar to the rubber compound stabilizing.
