Trucking: MC Number, safersys org, mc number

Question
A trucking company wants to haul for me. They gave me an MC number how do I check to verify they are legal and who they say they are? They also gave me a FEIN that I will try to check Monday.

I would also ask for references from other customers and have them provide an insurance certificate in your name.
