Trucking: owner operator, shipper receiver, engine warranty
QuestionHi Bob,
i am a driver looking to be an owner operator. My question is when you deal with a freight broker , he is the one paying for your load or what? and what is to look for when paying a used truck?
AnswerHi Mike.
Brokers pay you and the shipper (or receiver) pays the broker. Always make sure that your broker has a good credit rating. Some brokers have been known to collect from the shipper/receiver and disappear!
When you get a used truck, try to get an engine warranty. Engine rebuilds can cost $10,000 or more. Without that warranty, if the engine blows a week after you buy it, guess who foots the bill? If you can't get a warranty, find one with a recent rebuild AND papers to prove it. Also look for a truck with regular maintenance. Finally, if possible, look for a fleet owned truck. Most fleets are very good at maintenance and you'll know it's been taken care of.
Good luck!
