Vintage Cars: car wont start, mercedes benz 280, car wont start

the other day i drove to the store and went to start my 1979 mercedes-benz 280 and it wouldn't start. i turned the key all the way and heard a low whine  from the motor . so i replaced the starter and it still wont start . i need help . thanks ron.

need a little more informtion.  Is it turning over?  Battery OK?
I would venture a guess that it is fuel pump/fuel delivery.
How many miles on the car, any recent service?

Ground issues can be a culprit as well, is this a car you drive frequently?
