QuestionMy sister has a 1980 MGB black limited edition with a trunk rack and front spoiler and would like to sell it to me. According to her, it is in very good, if not perfect conditions. I do not know how much it is worth, and she really does not know how much to ask me for it. I really would not want to underpay her but would not want to overpay for it, either. Any ideas? The car is in Florida.
AnswerI'm afraid that's a hard one: I don't track prices, and that car is not special. So, personally, I would say "not much," i.e. < $6K and likely substantially less. I suggest you first go to Hemmings site (hemmings.com) and see if you can find any asking prices for roughly the same model in good condition, say 1977-80. Then of course deduct say 10% from asking to get a reasonable value.
Unfortunately these were not good cars: over the previous 10-15 years MGBs had lost substantial power, got rubber bumpers, and been jacked up higher off the ground. Certainly not a collectible, I'm afraid. (but please don't tell your sister I said so!)
For myself I would offer around $3-4K, and that might be generous. But even it it's not a collectible, and it's in good condition, you should be getting a fun car to tool around in; and it should be reasonably reliable.
