Where can I go to find specific  vehicle history as well as general info such as
how many built..how many left registered? I own one that is fully restored and
want to tell a more complete story.

Your best source for this type of info, or at the least a source of people that can head you in the right direction, are Chevrolet forums devoted to older models like the '71.  You need to do two types of Internet searches:  one worded along the lines of "Classic Chevrolet forums," "Chevrolet Malibu forums," and so on.  Then you should search for specific details.  I get questions every day that I find the data in less than a minute by searching Yahoo!  Want to know how many were built?  Type in "1971 Chevrolet Malibu production numbers," and watch all the sites pop up.  I don't understand why more people don't do this on their own, but I enjoy the data I find for folks.  '71 was a great year for the Malibu, nearly a record-setter.  A lot of convertibles were built and sold, a lot of them remain on the road, but it's a great car, respected by many people, so they'll retain a high value.
