A car title is a document declaring that someone is the legal owner of a car. The paper lists the name of the owner and the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you have lost a car title or its been damaged or stolen, you can replace it by contacting Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Although losing this important document is a stressful event, the DMV understands mistakes happen and has a system in place for replacing them.
Visit your state's DMV website (see Resources). Download the duplicate or replacement title application.
Print the application and fill it out. The form includes information about your car, your license, and why you're getting a new title. Check that everything is filled out and the application is signed.
Place the form, the title fee in an envelope. Mail it to the DMV or take it to a local DMV office.
Wait for your application to be approved. After approval, you'll receive the new title in about 10 business days.
