If your 1996 Chevy Blazer is equipped with four-wheel drive, you can manually shift the transfer case into four-wheel drive for off-road driving or to gain extra traction in bad weather. There are two four-wheel drive modes as noted on your four-wheel drive selector: four-wheel high and four-wheel low. Shift into four-wheel high if you need a little extra traction; shift into four-wheel low if you are stuck or driving in off-road conditions.
Drive your Blazer to a safe area away from traffic. Apply your foot to the brake pedal and shift the transmission into "Neutral."
Allow the Blazer to coast gently at about 1 to 2 miles-per-hour. It should be barely moving.
Press the four-wheel drive shift button on the floor console, then quickly and smoothly shift the lever down into four-wheel drive. Make sure the motion is fluid. Do not stop between settings.
Put the gear-shift selector back into "Drive," then begin driving.
Repeat the procedure when you are ready to shift back into two-wheel drive, but bring the shifter up into "2HI."
