Swapping out a factory-installed stereo to a car is a common upgrade. But even though installing a stereo is a relatively simple task, getting out the old deck can sometimes be a problem. Most Volkswagens need a special tool to remove the stereo. This tool is costly, but if you're in a bind and you need to get the stereo out immediately, making your own set of tools is easy to do.
Place the end of the steel dowel onto the grinder. Keep the dowel at a sharp angle--you're going to grind a shallow angle into the dowel.
Roll the dowel around on the bench grinder, forming a tapered point in the dowel. Don't make a point, but just taper down the rod. Do this for each end of each rod.
Bend the rod around your knee, forming a "u" shape in the steel.
Place one of each section of doweling into the stereo. There are two vertical holes on either side of the stereo; place the U-shaped tool into the holes so that it forms two handles.
Push the handles in until it releases the side clips that hold the stereo in place. This will cause the stereo to pop out a small amount, which is enough for you to grab the stereo by the sides and pull it out of the car.
