The Mercury Sable was introduced in 1986. It was available as a mid-size sedan until 2005 and in a full-size model until 2009. Edmunds.com reports that later model Sables exhibited above-average safety features, cargo room and fuel economy.
Mercury technical service bulletins (TSBs) indicate that some Sable models suffer from inoperable power windows. This is likely due to a failing power window motor, which pushes the window either up or down. Inoperable windows may get stuck in the up or down position.
TSBs also state that the Sable's front windows may produce a grunting noise when powered to the up position. If your windows are working intermittently, unusual noises might indicate a window motor failure. If the window motor is not repaired, the intermittent failure will become permanent.
TSBs report that another common Sable problem is a window getting stuck to the weatherstrip when in the up position. This occurrence is most likely due to a failing window motor and a damaged weatherstrip. A weatherstrip seal may become damaged due to environmental factors and infrequent use. The problem can be fixed by lubricating the weatherstrip and checking the window motor.
