Chevrolet Luminas are powered by four- or six-cylinder engines that are aluminum, gasoline, overhead-valve, and fuel-injected. These engines can develop starting problems in one of a number of different systems. Isolate problems and faulty components by performing a few simple tests.
Check the battery voltage and connections. Turn the key and listen for a "click" or a "clunk." A click indicates that the starter relay is working, but not the solenoid. A clunk indicates that the solenoid is working, but not the starter motor. Ensure that the transmission control is fully in the "Park" position. Transmission or clutch safety switch may be faulty.
Check the flywheel for broken or missing teeth. Check that the starter pinion gear does not bind on the flywheel. A broken or worn starter clutch causes this symptom, too.
Verify that there is fuel in the vehicle. Turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump noise. Lack of fuel pump noise indicates a bad fuel pump, fuel pump relay or fuel pump fuse.
Damaged ignition components cause this symptom as will excessive spark plug gap. A faulty ignition module causes this problem as can damaged associated wiring.
Look for burnt or loose electrical connectors at the alternator and the coils. Fuel filter may be clogged. An air leak between the intake manifold and the injector throttle body causes this symptom as well.
