The 1999 Toyota Corolla uses a closed fuel tank system to prevent fuel vapors containing harmful hydrocarbons from entering the atmosphere. This system is designed to monitor itself for any leaks of these vapors and alert the driver via the check-engine light.
The fuel evaporation canister is located under the car, between the fuel tank and the driver-side rear fender. There is a protective plate under the canister to protect it from road damage.
