Toyota released the Tacoma pickup midway through the 1995 model year, as the replacement for the Toyota pickup -- formerly known as the Hi-Lux. The 2001 Tacoma had three engines available: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a 3.4-liter V-6, all of which had an electric fuel pump delivering fuel from the gas tank to the engine. A relay turns the pump on and off with the ignition. When the 2001 Tacoma's relay fails, knowing its location makes the repair quick and easy.
Toyota positioned the 2001 Tacoma's under-hood junction bock -- which houses relays and fuses -- on the driver's side of the engine compartment, just behind the battery. It is black in color and has a plastic lid on top of it.
The 2001 Tacoma's fuel pump relay -- known as the EFI relay on the 2001 Tacoma -- is inside the under-hood junction block. Remove the plastic lid from the junction block, and the fuel pump relay is on the far-right side of the junction block; it's the second relay from the bottom.
Replacing the 2001 Tacoma's fuel pump relay is an easy task. Pull it straight up from the junction block, using a slight wiggling motion to remove to. To install a new relay, line up the prongs on the bottom of the relay up with the slots in the junction block, and press the relay into the junction block.
