The pilot bearing on an S10 is located in a cavity in the center of the flywheel on a manual transmission only. It is a cylindrical brass bushing intended to support the input shaft on the transmission. The engine has a flywheel with a clutch and pressure plate attached to it. The front input shaft on the transmission has splines on the end with a smooth post on the very tip of the shaft. The post rides in the pilot bearing and stabilizes the input shaft. This puts a lot less stress on the input shaft bearing in the transmission.
Chisel a groove in the pilot bearing on one side, using the chisel and hammer.
Pry the bearing out, using a screwdriver to bend the bushing inward to loosen it in its sleeve in the flywheel.
Grab the pilot bearing with the pliers and pull it the rest of the way out of the flywheel.
Install the new bearing and tap it in evenly until it is flush with the top of the sleeve in the flywheel.
Apply a small amount of grease to the inside of the pilot bearing.
