The Volkswagen Jetta's combination switch usually controls the rear and front-windshield wipers, turn signals, headlights, dimmers, bright-headlights and windshield-wiper-fluid pump. With so much functionality in a single switch, having one that does not function properly might cause several problems at the same time. These problems could be of such a severity that the car is not legally drivable. Replace a faulty combination switch as soon as possible.
Disconnect the negative battery lead.
Remove the steering wheel. Remove the airbag if the car is so equipped.
Unscrew the upper and lower covers on the steering column.
Remove the three, switch-assembly retaining screws.
Disconnect the wires from the switch assemblies, and remove both switches.
Connect wires to the new combination switches. Attach the wires with the three retaining-screws.
Refasten the upper and lower steering-column covers.
Reattach the steering wheel and air bag. Do not activate the airbag.
Reconnect the negative battery lead. Start the car. Check that the combinations switches have full functionality.
