The starter on a 1992 Lexus SC400 is located below the manifold assembly near the firewall. It is a tight place to work in, but it can be accomplished from the top of the vehicle as well as below. The starter has a dull metal finish and has a black solenoid attached to the side. When replacing the starter recycle the core at your local auto parts store or dealership. Never throw away a starter in the garbage.
Disconnect the negative battery cable using a socket wrench. Place the battery cable to the side so it is not touching metal.
Remove the air intake assembly by loosening the clip with a pliers at the air intake. Pull assembly straight off and lay aside.
Locate the intake manifold assemblies. They are located on both sides of the engine block when viewing the vehicle from the front. Using a socket wrench, remove the five intake manifold bolts on each manifold assembly.
Remove the two starter bolts located on each side of the starter using a socket wrench. There are two bolts total. Before pulling the starter out of the starter mounting bracket, remove the solenoid wire attached to the solenoid using a socket wrench. Pull out the starter.
Locate the starter mounting bracket, and place the new starter into position. Attach the solenoid wire to the starter using a socket wrench. Tighten the solenoid wire to 18 inch-pounds.
Tighten the two starter bolts using a torque wrench to 29 foot-pounds. The starter bolts slide through the starter mounting bracket into the starter.
Place the existing manifold assemblies into their previous position. Using a torque wrench replace each manifold bolt, and torque to 29 foot-pounds.
Connect the air intake assembly to the air intake by hand. Slide the clip back on to the air intake assembly by hand. Connect the negative battery cable using a socket wrench.
