A starter motor is a high-torque electric motor for turning the gear on an engine's flywheel. Starters are common on cars, trucks, boats and all-terrain vehicles. The starter motor has evolved from early manual starters (hand cranks on old cars). They are often located on the underside of a vehicle, close to the engine block and transmission housing.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the torque converter. The torque converter is used to help the transmission shift gears. It looks like a doughnut and slides off the transmission. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the lower front air deflector.
Pull off the starter electrical connectors. Using the appropriate wrench, remove the two bolts holding the starter in place. Remove the starter.
