How to Remove the 2001 Dodge Ram's 1500 Fuel Tank

The fuel tank in your 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 may need to be removed for service, whether due to a faulty, in-tank fuel pump or fuel level sending unit, or the tank may have a buildup of debris that is interfering with proper fuel flow. Or you may just want to install a higher capacity tank to increase the range of your Ram 1500 . Either way, while time-consuming, this job is not beyond the capabilities of the average do-it-yourselfer.

Things You'll Need

  • Combination wrench set
  • Floor jack
  • Flat head screwdriver set
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery with a wrench.

  • Position a floor jack under the center of the tank. Apply slight upward pressure with the jack.

  • Use a combination wrench to remove the nuts that hold the tank straps tight, one per strap. Remove the straps.

  • Lower the tank until you can reach the filler hose. Use a 3/8-inch combination wrench to loosen the hose clamp. Pull the hose free of the tank.

  • Locate the pump/sender assembly on the top of the tank. Unplug the electrical connector from the assembly.

  • Disconnect the fuel delivery, return and vent lines from the top of the tank. Lower the tank to the ground with the jack.
