Replacing or flushing the coolant in a Honda needs to be done every two to three years--not counting refilling the coolant tank when it's low. The coolant system is what keeps the engine running at optimal levels. It also prevents the engine from over-heating. Maintaining the coolant system is necessary for the health of the vehicle. Failing to do this simple repair can create costly damages in the engine. Just a couple tools and about an hour of time can prevent this.
Make sure the engine is cool before replacing the coolant. Removing the radiator cap before the engine is cool can lead to injuries from steam and heat.
Pop the engine hood and look for the radiator. The radiator is a large block located on the driver's side of the vehicle with many hoses running to and from it.
Use a towel to unscrew the radiator cap. Place the towel over the whole radiator cap, push down the cap and turn to the right.
Remove the drain bolt located next to the radiator cap with the socket wrench.
Place a bucket underneath the car next to the radiator cock pin. This pin is on the bottom of the radiator and looks like a large screw with wings to help turn it. Loosen the screw and let the coolant drain out of the car for 10 to 15 minutes until it stops.
Remove the bucket, screw the cock pin back in tightly. Replace the drain bolt and the radiator cap. Unscrew the cap on the coolant tank which is a clear tank on the passenger-side of the vehicle. Pour in coolant up to the "Cool" fill line. Replace the cap. Close the hood.
