Fixing an air conditioning problem with your car can be very expensive. When an A/C system needs repair or maintenance it can be a simple problem or more complicated. Troubleshooting a car's A/C system and finding the problem yourself will save lots of money if you are able to fix what is wrong.
Open the fuse box and replace the fuse for the A/C unit. The fuse box can be underneath the hood on the driver's side, or on the bottom of the dash, below the steering wheel. Each fuse box has a diagram that will tell you what fuse goes to the car's air conditioning system.
Recharge the car's A/C with Freon. You can recharge the car's system yourself with a kit that can be found at a department store or mechanic shop. Be sure to check the user's manual for the car to determine how much and what kind of Freon your car will need.
Place the Freon hose on the pressure port on the air conditioner compressor.
Open the release valve on the can, allow the Freon to flow into the system and close the release valve. Some cars may need more than one can; check the car's user manual to be sure.
Turn the car on and start the A/C. Start out with the air conditioner on low and then slowly adjust the settings until the A/C is set to high. This will circulate the new Freon throughout the car's air conditioning system.
