The 1966 Ford Mustang featured a dashboard-mounted ignition switch. When the switch is turned to the "ON" position, a signal is sent to the starter solenoid. The solenoid acts as a gateway between the battery and the starter. The solenoid opens and allows the power from the battery to turn the starter motor. Therefore, a defective ignition switch may prevent the engine from starting and should be replaced. Replacing the ignition switch generally takes about 15 minutes and requires no major disassembly.
