There are a number of reasons that you might need to replace a steering wheel on a 1996 Toyota Camry. You could have this done by a mechanic, but even if you have only limited mechanical experience, you should be able to tackle the job yourself using a few special tools. One note of caution is that you need to be careful while working around the airbag module when replacing the steering wheel on a 1996 Toyota Camry.
Move the steering wheel so that the wheels are straight.
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal.
Loosen the cover on the sides of the steering wheel with a small screwdriver.
Remove the Torx screws holding the airbag module in place. Disconnect the airbag module electrical connection. Remove the airbag module from the wheel.
Disconnect the electrical connectors for the horn and cruise control.
Loosen and remove the steering wheel retaining nut. Attach the steering wheel puller to the shaft and remove the steering wheel. A steering wheel puller can be rented at most auto parts stores.
Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise until their is some resistance when turning the cable. Turn the cable clockwise approximately three turns and align the two red marks.
Install the new steering wheel onto the wheel shaft. Tighten the shaft nut to 26 ft.-lbs. of torque.
Reconnect the horn and cruise control connections.
Connect the airbag module electrical connection. Install the airbag module. Replace the Torx screws and tighten to 78 in.-lbs. of torque.
Reconnect the negative cable to the battery terminal.
