The 1996 Chevy 1500 was manufactured with sealed beam headlights and composite headlights. Sealed beam headlights mean the entire light assembly needs replacement when a bulb burns out, while composite headlights mean the bulb needs replacement. Different models of the vehicle used one headlight system or the other. When a headlamp blows out on your Chevy 1500, you should replace it immediately to ensure your safety while driving.
Remove the four screws on the front of the headlight retainer using a Phillips screwdriver and slide the headlight lamp and retainer out of the frame of the vehicle.
Pull the retainer off of the front of the lamp and unplug the electrical connector from the back of the lamp. Discard the lamp once the electrical connector is removed.
Plug the electrical connector into the new headlight lamp and slide the lamp into the frame of the vehicle.
Push the headlight retainer onto the lamp and insert the four screws to secure it.
Open the hood of the 1500 and remove the two screws on the headlight support. The screws are located near the radiator support on the car frame.
Pull the headlight lens assembly out of the frame and unplug the electrical connector.
Turn the bulb to the left and pull it out of the socket. Discard the bulb after removal.
Insert the replacement bulb into the socket, turn it to the right until it is tight and plug the electrical connector into the back.
Slide the headlight lens assembly into the frame and reattach the two screws to the headlight support.
