A faulty alternator in your Saturn can cause a whole host of symptoms. Most of the systems on this car are computer-controlled and require a minimum of 12.7 volts to operate properly. The standard engine package found in a Saturn is the 1.9 liter DOHC motor. The alternator in this vehicle is located low in the engine compartment and, as a result, is a difficult alternator to replace. The average weekend mechanic should be able to complete this repair in about two hours using basic hand tools.
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Position the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels and set the parking brake. Raise the passenger side wheel using the floor jack and position a jack stand under the front sub-frame. Lower the Saturn onto the jack stand. Remove the passenger side front wheel. Remove the passenger side inner-fender splash shield.
Remove the serpentine belt by compressing the tensioner, located to the right of the alternator pulley, with a 15 mm wrench and slipping the belt off the alternator pulley. Unplug the electrical connector and unbolt the battery cable found on the back of the alternator.
Remove the upper and lower mounting bolts using a 14 mm wrench, socket and ratchet.
Guide the loose alternator down onto the axle and tie-rod. Slide the alternator out of the engine compartment through the fenderwell.
