Replacing a car's fuel pump is a time consuming, sometimes difficult task. It's not a procedure that's recommended for a person inexperienced with working on vehicles, because working with a car's fuel system can be dangerous. Nevertheless, if you are mechanically inclined, you can replace the fuel pump in your 1994 Acura Integra. All 1994 Integras are equipped with a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder model, so the replacement procedure is the same on all models. Make sure you have at least an hour to devote to the procedure before beginning.
Make sure your fuel tank is no more than one-quarter full. If it is more than one-quarter full, drive the Integra until the indicator reaches the recommended level. If this is not possible, you'll need to siphon some of the fuel out. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery. Gather all of your parts and tools.
Remove the gas cap. Locate the fuel filter in the engine compartment. It's against the firewall, next to the battery. On the top part of the fuel filter is a large bolt. This bolt is used to relieve the fuel pressure. Apply a 12mm wrench to the bolt; wrap a shop towel around the bolt where the wrench attaches to it. Carefully turn the bolt one turn counterclockwise to relieve the fuel system pressure.
Remove the single bolt beneath the rear seat cushion. Lift the cushion upward to remove it and access the fuel-pump service cover. Set the cushion outside of the vehicle, in a safe place, while you're replacing the fuel pump.
Remove the three Phillips screws from the service cover. Remove the service cover and set it aside to access the fuel pump. Unplug the electrical connection from the fuel-pump assembly.
Disconnect the hoses from the fuel-pump unit. Mark or label the hoses according to the position on the unit. You'll need this to correctly attach them when installing the new fuel pump.
Remove the six bolts from the fuel-pump unit. Carefully lift the unit out of your Integra. Place it in a container suitable for storage fuel.
Attach the O-ring gasket to the replacement fuel pump, if it is not already installed. Lower the fuel pump into its mount. Tighten the six bolts to 4.3 pound-feet of torque. Reconnect the fuel lines per their original position. Reconnect the electrical connection.
Replace the fuel-pump service cover. Tighten the three Phillips screws. Replace the rear seat cushion and tighten its bolt. Replace the negative battery cable on the battery.
