Removing a headlight switch is normally a simple procedure for most automobiles. The headlight switch is typically on the turn-signal stalk, so removing the stalk and replacing it will normally solve the problem. Some switches, however, are inside the steering column--so fixing a switch of this type entails removing the steering column cover.
Disconnect the cable running to the negative battery terminal. Loosen the nut on the cable clamp by turning it counterclockwise with a socket wrench.
Pull the headlight stalk/turn-signal stalk straight off the side of the steering column. In many vehicles, this stalk pulls straight off. On some vehicles, you must press in a release tab to unlock the stalk so you can pull it off.
Remove the screws holding the steering column cover in place.
Pry off the steering column cover.
