The Geo Tracker was heavily marketed through the 1990s and then discontinued in 1997. Chevy continued the design a the Suzuki Viatra. The following offers detail information about the installation of a new thermostat in the 1.3L and 1.6L engines.
Drain the engine coolant so that the level is below that of the thermostat. Detach the upper radiator hose to allow more working space.
Loosen and remove the mounting bolts on the thermostat housing. Lift the thermostat housing from the intake manifold. Discard the gasket.
Grasp the thermostat firmly and pull it from the intake manifold. Clean all the mating surfaces until they're free of gasket material, debris and dirt.
Set the new thermostat on the intake manifold with the spring side down. Make sure the air bleed valve is pointing towards the front of the engine.
Place the new gasket on the thermostat. Set the thermostat housing over the thermostat on the intake manifold. Place the thermostat housing mounting bolts in place and evenly tighten them.
Reattach the upper radiator hose to the housing. Fill the cooling system with the appropriate type and amount of coolant.
Start the engine. Check for coolant leaks. Make sure all systems are operating.
