Jeep introduced the Cherokee XJ-Series in 1984. The Cherokee XJ is a compact SUV that is available in either two- or four-wheel-drive. From 1984 to 1986, the Cherokee was powered by a 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder or a 2.8-liter V-6 engine. Later models of the Cherokee were powered by a 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder, or a 4.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine. The Cherokee XJ has a motor mount on each side of the engine. Fortunately, the mounts for any engine are similar in design and are replaced in almost the same manner.
Park the Cherokee on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake. Raise the front of the Cherokee with a jack and support with jack stands.
Place a jack with a piece of 2 by 4 inch wood between the jack and oil pan and raise the jack until pressure is put on the pan.
Remove the nut and bolt that attaches the mount to the engine bracket with a wrench, ratchet and socket. Remove the bolt on top of the mount at the frame with a ratchet and socket. Remove the bolt from the underside of the mount at the frame with a ratchet and socket. On the passenger side of the 2.5-liter engine, remove the nuts from the two studs on the underside of the frame. Raise the engine far enough to allow you to remove the mount.
Position a new mount on the frame and install the bolts, or nuts for the passenger side of the 2.5-liter engine. You will tighten them later.
Slowly lower the engine until you can install the engine bolt. Remove the jack. Install the nut and torque it to 51 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket. Torque the frame bolts or nuts to 40 foot-pounds.
Raise the front of the Cherokee, remove the jack stands and lower it to the ground.
