Some truck engines seem to last forever, unlike the frame, which tends to rust. If you're a truck lover, you may be able to keep your truck longer. All you need are a few pieces of equipment, and you can repair your truck's frame.
Determine the amount of rust on the frame. If you notice a considerable amount of rust, check the entire frame. Use a grinder or cutting torch to remove, if possible, any welded pieces from the frame. This will make sand blasting the entire frame more convenient.
Remove as much rust and old paint as possible. Use a sandblaster or sand it manually to expose the metal. Check for damage, such as cracks or blistering.
Cut away rusted parts with a torch, grinder or hacksaw.
Make a template of the pieces you'll need to repair the patches of metal you removed. Most people like to use a piece of cardboard and a blade or sharp, small knife. Make sure the template fits perfectly.
Place your cardboard template on a piece of metal and spray paint around it. Remove the cardboard from the metal; you should now have a perfect template. Cut out your metal patch. Smooth all metal patches by sanding around the edges.
Rust-proof the patches as well as the entire frame. There are many rust-proof products on the market. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when performing this step.
Weld on the metal patches. Create a strong weld for durability. Smooth the weld by sanding and grinding it. Apply a primer to the entire frame, wait for it to dry and apply a coat of paint.
