You can make your 12-valve Cummins engine smoke by replacing the stock fuel plate with an aftermarket one. Fuel plates are sold by a variety of manufacturers with a wide range of fuel settings to suit your individual needs. Fuel plates are categorized from zero to 10. Lower-numbered fuel plates offer the greatest fuel increase and provide the most smoke during acceleration. You can install the fuel plate yourself using simple tools.
Open the hood of your vehicle.
Remove the intake manifold, located on the top of the engine, using a wrench. The intake manifold attaches the air hose from the turbocharger to the engine. It is held to the engine by six bolts. Use a 12 mm wrench to unfasten the bolts. Removing the intake manifold will allow you to access the injection pump.
Locate the injection pump on the driver's side of the engine. A boost line attaches to the pump from the turbocharger. The cover is held on by two 8 mm bolts as well as a flat-head screw and a break-off screw that secures the cover to the injection pump. Remove these bolts and screws, and then remove the cover from the injection pump.
Remove the two bolts that secure the fuel plate inside the injection pump with a wrench. Grasp the fuel plate and lift it out of the vehicle. Make a note of the fuel pump's orientation in the injection pump for later reassembly.
Install the new fuel plate into the injection pump. Install the stock bolts and fasten them with a wrench.
Reinstall the injection pump cover. Thread the bolts through the injection pump cover and into the injection pump. Tighten the bolts with a wrench.
Reinstall the intake manifold and tighten the bolts with a wrench.
