For some people, the center armrest in a Subaru Outback is too low and far back to provide the support and comfort they want when driving. A center armrest extension kit is available from both Subaru and third-party manufacturers. The armrest extension kit allows the center armrest to be raised and brought forward for increased comfort while still functioning as a locking lid for the center console area.
Remove the cover on the rear of the center console, just above the rear cup holder. It should come off easily by inserting a flat-head screwdriver into the upper lip of the cover.
Remove the single screw located behind the cover.
Remove the rear console compartment, including the cup holder.
Remove the two screws that fasten the center armrest lid.
Replace the lid with the armrest extension, fastening it to the center console with the two screws from the original lid.
Replace the rear compartment of the console, attaching it to the center console with the original screw.
Replace the rear compartment cover above the cup holder.
