The S10 had a 23-year run as Chevy's compact truck. Within those 23 years, however, there were only two generations, so changes were not plentiful through its production life. In 1999, the S10 had two engine options: a 2.2-liter four-cylinder with 120 horsepower and a 4.3-liter V-6 with 180 horsepower.
Both the standard 2.2-liter and optional 4.3-liter engines use a timing chain instead of a belt. Chevrolet did not recommend any maintenance procedures for this chain.
