If the chrome is beginning to flake, blister, and peel off the rims on the wheels of your automobile, no doubt it looks unsightly. This peeling is caused by a defect in the chrome plating, usually the result of improper preparation and adhesion, not because of environmental factors like road dust and rock chips. If you would like to speed the process along and make all the chrome peel off so that you can refinish the rims, there are at least a couple processes that will get the job done.
Spray a generous coat of Easy-Off Oven Cleaner onto the rims. Make sure you are wearing gloves and working in a well-ventilated area.
Let the oven cleaner sit on the rims for about an hour.
Observe whether or not the chrome is bubbling up on the surface of the rims. If it is, use old rags to remove it.
Put some water in a bowl.
Mix in some Comet until you have the consistency of toothpaste.
Rub the mixture onto the rims with the toothbrush, scrubbing until all the chrome is gone.
