With German engineering and designing, the Volkswagen Jetta is a compact four-door sedan with a turbocharged engine. The ECU, also known as the Electronic Control Unit, will need to removed from your Jetta when replacing it with a new one. When upgrading your Jetta with an aftermarket performance chip, the ECU will also need to be removed from the vehicle. Follow these steps on your Volkswagen Jetta to properly and successfully remove the ECU, without going to a mechanic.
Park your Jetta on level ground.
Switch off the ignition, remove the key from the ignition, and apply the parking brake.
Open the hood of your Jetta and disconnect the battery cable.
Pry and remove both of the Jetta's wiper arm plastic covers with the use of a medium flat head screwdriver.
Remove the 13mm nuts that hold the wiper arms to your Jetta, with a 13mm socket and ratchet, in a counterclockwise motion. Maneuver the wiper arms with your hands to release them from the Jetta.
Pull off your Jetta's weather stripping, located by the wiper arms.
Lift the plastic pollen filter lid to gain access to the Jetta's plastic bracket. Pull and unclip the plastic bracket from the plastic tabs, and then remove the left side wiring harness by pulling on its tab.
Pry at the metal tab that is assembled to the Jetta's ECU, with the use of a medium flat head screwdriver.
Lift the plastic ECU cover and maneuver and rotate the ECU while pulling it away from your Jetta with one hand, and pull at the right wiring harness tab with your other hand.
