Motor mounts support the engine and secure it to the frame, while allowing limited movement and absorbing vibration. Motor mounts typically consist of both metal and rubber components. Over time, the rubber becomes brittle and may crack, sag or break.
Excessive vibration from the engine running, especially at idle, can indicate loose or broken motor mounts.
Loose motor mounts may contribute to a dull thump or clunking noise or sensation when shifting an automatic transmission into gear, or when shifting between "Drive" and "Reverse."
Depending on the model year and engine option, sagging engine mounts may cause the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper to rub on the frame cross-member. This will cause a loud scraping noise. This problem may be intermittent or worsen when the vehicle is cold, during cold weather; or when driving over rough terrain.
