Window tinting film has become very popular, especially in warmer climates, as an effective way to keep the interior of a car cooler. It is less expensive than buying pre-tinted windows. However, like regular glass, it can sometimes get scratched. When that happens, you can either replace the whole window film or attempt a repair that will make it invisible to most casual observers.
Starting at one edge or near the scratch, use a razor blade to pry up the tinting film and pull it off.
Spray distilled water onto the window and remove as much of the glue from the window as possible.
Trace the inside of the window with a pencil and craft paper to create a template.
Cut out the template with scissors.
Using your template as a guide, cut out the window tint film with scissors and press the film to the inside of the window.
Push all of the air bubbles out of the film with a squeegee.
Cut off any overhang with scissors or a razor blade.
Cut around the scratch in the film with a razor blade, all the way to the glass. To make the repair easier, cut in the shape of a rectangle.
Spray the damaged area with distilled water and lift it up with a razor blade.
Remove any adhesive on the window with distilled water and a razor blade.
Using a pencil and craft paper, trace around the section you just removed to create a stencil.
Cut out the stencil with scissors.
Using a razor and stencil, cut a patch out of window tinting film. Apply the patch to the window.
Use a squeegee to remove air bubbles from the film. Cut off any overhang with a razor blade.
