Until the 2000 model year, the Ford Escort had been Ford's small-car offering, but that changed with the introduction of the Focus. Still using a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, transversely front-mounted engine, the Focus had a more modern look than the Escort. The Focus LX was a step up from the most basic Focus. The rear seats in coupe, sedan and wagon models featured a fold-down rear seat to expand the cargo area when rear passenger seating was not needed.
Open the vehicle's trunk lid.
Locate the rear seat locking controls on each side of the seat within the trunk compartment.
Pull out on the control knob on one or both sides, depending on the amount of cargo room or rear seating needed.
Push forward on the seat back you want to lower from within the trunk compartment.
Fold the seat back to its lowest position. Close the trunk lid.
Locate the seat-locking control on the top of the upper seat cushion inside the passenger compartment.
Push in on the seat-locking control button.
Pull the seat back forward.
Move the seat back downward to its lowest position.
Repeat this procedure to lower the other rear seat back.
