The BMW X5 is a luxury crossover sports utility vehicle first produced in 1999. Like any vehicle, keeping the taillights up to date and in working order is a key feature for safety. Other drivers will recognize your actions while driving and be better prepared to adjust their driving accordingly. Replacing the rear taillights is a simple do-it-yourself task that will take less than 30 minutes to complete with only a flat screwdriver.
Make sure your vehicle is turned off, as well as the lights. Open the liftgate to reveal the taillight assembly panels.
Open the cover of the left or right rear taillight assembly panel by pulling and lifting if necessary.
Turn the socket assembly counterclockwise until loose and pull it from the taillight assembly.
Pull the bulb from the socket and replace it with a new bulb.
Put the socket assembly back into the taillight assembly and turn clockwise until secure.
Replace the taillight assembly cover by pushing it into place.
Unclip the trim panel in the tailgate with a flat screwdriver by wedging it beneath the panel and pushing down to reveal the lights in the tailgate.
Repeat Step 3 through Step 6 for the taillights located in the tailgate.
Reattach the trim panel to the tailgate by pushing it into place.
