If you’ve noticed your headlights starting to dim or they have burned out completely, it’s time to change them. If you’ve been putting off taking your 2001 Ford F-150 to the shop, you don’t have to be an auto mechanic to remove and replace the front headlights. Although the halogen bulbs in your F-150 aren’t as simple to remove as the plug-in sealed-beam headlights used in older Ford models, you can still do the job without any tools.
Open and secure the F-150’s hood with the hood prop.
Push the two retaining clips securing the headlight assembly up and back. The clips are at the back of the headlight assembly.
Pull the entire assembly toward you and off the guide ribs.
Pull off the electrical connector from the back of the bulb.
Twist the bulb retaining ring counterclockwise and remove it from the base of the bulb.
Pull the used bulb out of the assembly. Do not turn the bulb.
Line up the grooves on the plastic base with the grooves in the assembly and push it in.
Reinstall the bulb assembly by reversing steps 4 and 5.
