Changing a burnt-out rear stop light on your 2001 Mazda Tribute can prevent you from getting a ticket or causing an accident on the road. Take a few minutes to perform this simple and important maintenance if you discover your rear stop light, also called a third brake light or a high-mount brake light, has quit. Otherwise, it could cost you much more than a replacement bulb if you get ticketed or cause a wreck.
Turn off your 2001 Mazda Tribute's ignition.
Lift the Tribute's liftgate.
Unscrew the two screws on rear light assembly. They are located on the interior of the liftgate.
Pull the assembly straight out from the back of the car.
Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull it out.
Pull the old bulb out of the socket.
Push the new bulb into the socket.
Reinstall the rear light assembly and secure with the screws. Close the liftgate and test the brake, using your rearview mirror and the rear of the Tribute's reflection in a building's window to see if the light comes on when you press the brake, or by asking someone to check light while you mash the brake.
