Dexron III -- commonly misspelled Dextron III -- is an automatic and power shift transmission fluid. There is no SAE weight on transmission fluid. Many transmission fluids for sale will display Dexron III or Dexron III/Mercon on the label. Transmission fluids with these names on the label mean they meet or exceed the Dexron III/Mercon specifications.
Owners' manuals will indicate that a specific vehicle needs a certain type of transmission fluid, such as Type F, Type A, or Type CJ. These type letters refer to fluids developed for different transmissions. For instance, Type F fluids meet Ford Motor Company's M2C33-F specifications. A type CJ fluid is a special fluid for Ford C6 transmissions. Allison C-4 is a fluid specially designed for industrial transmissions.
Dexron III and Mercon are names for the technical specifications for transmission fluid. Dexron III, created by General Motors, also uses the specification number GM 6297-M. Mercon, created by Ford, uses the specification number M2C185A.
The Dexron III automatic transmission fluids are suitable to use for vehicles requiring Ford M2C138CJ, Type H, Type A or Type A-Suffix A, M2C33f, Type F and Type CJ fluids. It is also suitable for industrial use equipment requiring Allison Type C-4 and Caterpillar TO-2 fluids.
