The Toyota Prius uses both batteries and gasoline for power. Unlike gasoline-only vehicles, the 2006 Prius is equipped with two batteries: a standard lead-acid (Pb-A) 12V accessory battery found on most vehicles and a Panasonic Metal Case Prismatic Module, which is designed for the Prius.
A lead-acid battery is made up of plates, lead, lead oxide and an electrolyte solution. Lead-acid batteries are available in several varieties, such as Starting (cranking) and Deep-Cycle, which are used for marine and golf carts. A Starting battery is developed to produce quick bursts of energy to start more powerful engines. The Prius requires a Starting battery.
The Toyota Prius' 12V battery is located under the hood on the top-right hand side near the engine. To access the battery you will need to remove the plastic protective covering on the battery.
The 12V battery on the 2006 Prius (and other model years) can be jumped like batteries on non-hybrid vehicles, because the 12V is a standard battery. A dead 12V battery on a Prius can be jumped by any vehicle that has a 12V battery.
