A universal joint joins two moving parts such as the shafts of a car. The design of the joint allows for controlled movement of the shafts, which control the motion of the wheels. When a repair or maintenance is being performed on a car, it is a good idea to replace the universal joints. This keeps your steering and other vehicle-related functions working well.
Lift your car by using a jack so you can access the universal joint. Rest the car on stands.
Remove the bolts on the underside of the universal joint with a socket wrench so you can lift the end clamps.
Move the shaft that runs through the joint by sliding it to the side once you remove the end clamps.
Etch a small mark into each of the parts of the joint using a sharp tool. These marks will help you align the parts when you reassemble the joint.
Tighten the yoke of the joint shaft in a vise so you can remove the snap rings with pliers. Remove the joint from the vise.
Fit one socket wrench on the lower bearing cap and fit another wrench over the other side of the bearing.
Put the wrench back into the vise at the yoke. Tighten it until the bearing is forced out.
Remove each of the remaining bearings in the same way to disassemble the joint.
