The SES, or Service Engine Soon, light in a Nissan Pathfinder is on the instrument gauge panel. The light comes on when the car finds a problem within the engine. You cannot deactivate the light by simply disconnecting and reconnecting the battery -- you must reset it with a scan tool that connects to the Pathfinder and communicates with its onboard diagnostics system. You can reset the light in seconds using the scan tool.
Put the Pathfinder in park and place the key in the ignition. Turn the key to the "On" position but do not crank the car.
Locate the communication port for the Pathfinder. It is underneath the driver's-side dashboard and will be covered by a plastic plate that simply pulls off.
Connect the scan tool to the port on the Pathfinder.
Turn on the automotive scanning tool and select "ECM," "Codes," "clear all codes." Some scan tools may use other, but similar commands -- refer to the manual that came with the tool.
Unplug the automotive scan tool and crank your engine. Wait a few seconds and then check that the SES light has indeed turned off.
