Jeep manufactured the Grand Cherokee in 2001 with a 4.0 L six-cylinder engine and a 4.7 L eight-cylinder engine. Both model engines operated a four-wheel drive, which includes the transfer case and differentials. The fluid recommendations cover the transfer case and differentials, engine oil and transmission, and the hydraulic systems.
Use 6.1 qts. of SAE 10w30 engine oil for both model engines. The transmission code (located in the owner's manual or on a sticker beneath the hood) 42RE uses 12.4 qts. of synthetic multi-vehicle automatic transmission fluid, and the transmission code 42RFE uses 14.1 qts. of the same oil. The levels reflect a total fill-level for the transmission. Check the fluid level before adding transmission oil with the engine running and hot to ensure you do not overfill the transmission.
The Grand Cherokee offers Quadra-Drive and Vari-Lok, which allows for improved control while operating under four-wheel drive. The front and rear differential on both model engines with Quadra-Drive or Vari-Lok uses SAE 75w140, and the ones without use SAE 80w90. The transfer case uses synthetic multi-vehicle ATF. Fill levels for the different boxes depend upon the size of the transfer case, engine and differential, but they all have fill-plug holes. The boxes are full when the fluid is flush with the bottom of the fill-plug hole.
All variations of the Grand Cherokee call for standard power-steering fluid in the power-steering system. The brake and clutch hydraulic systems use DOT-3 brake fluid. All three have individual reservoirs marked with "full" and "add" lines to ensure proper levels are maintained. Check the fluid levels and keep at no less than half-full when bleeding any of the three systems.
