Your Volkswagen O2, or oxygen, sensor is instrumental in maintaining proper air-fuel ratios in your vehicle's engine. A faulty O2 sensor can lead to excessive fuel consumption and inefficient engine combustion. Additionally, if you attempt to have your vehicle inspected at a state inspection facility, there is a chance that your vehicle will not pass the inspection. Replace your oxygen sensor to keep your Volkswagen performing at its best.
Remove the O2 sensor clip from the engine wiring harness by unsnapping the clip.
Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield by unbolting the three bolts that hold the manifold shield. Place the shield and bolts to the side of your work area.
Remove the two bolts that hold the O2 sensor to the exhaust manifold.
Remove the old O2 sensor gasket on the exhaust manifold.
Lightly clean the O2 mounting surface with the wire brush.
Place the new O2 gasket on the surface of the exhaust manifold.
Install the new O2 sensor. Reinstall the exhaust manifold shield and clip the O2 sensor into the engine wiring harness.
